LEAD! A NEGLECTED KILLER
It can kill your future and even take your life.
A University of Notre Dame research team recently found that the lead poisoning of South Bend’s children is even worse than originally reported by the Indiana Health Department. Their report identified three census tracts on South Bend’s near northwest side in which at least 20% of tested children had elevated blood lead levels. In the recent UND analysis, eight South Bend census tracts had levels above 20%; Census Tract 6 measured 36%!
An upcoming community meeting will focus on the deadly, and costly, consequences of lead poisoning and discuss ways to prevent future exposure of our children. Lead poisoning is a serious hazard for children and causes significant biological and neurologic damage that has been linked to increased infant mortality and to serious educational challenges involving both achievement and discipline.
