We first learned about the proposal to “right-size” and “reorganize” South Bend’s public schools at the January 25th meeting of the Board of School Trustees. For the changes to be implemented, they must be adopted by our elected school board representatives, who are accountable to the voters who elected them and the taxpayers who support our system of public education.

At their February 22nd meeting, Board members voted to close Hay and Tarkington Elementary Schools at the end of this school year. In addition, representatives of the SBCSC administration provided some information about plans for Muessel Elementary and Marquette Montessori Academy.  A second Board vote on the reorganization plan for Muessel and Marquette is scheduled for Monday, March 1st

The February 24th meeting provides an opportunity to hear and discuss issues that can affect the future of public education in South Bend.  A panel of local education activists will offer brief comments addressing questions such as:
      – When can a school be Identified as “public”?
      – How have proposals changed since August 25; what’s the current proposal?
      – Is this the right time to restructure?
      – Why is public involvement critical to school improvement?
Their presentations will be followed by a period for questions and comments.
